Lornas Schweigen is an international cinema co-production by the Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne from 2008. The film had its world premiere on May 19, 2008 at the Cannes International Film Festival , where it was nominated for a Palme d' Or. The cinema premiere in Germany took place on October 9, 2008. The Silence of Lorna was born on 23 October with the LUX Prize of the European Parliament awarded.

action

By marrying the drug addict Claudy, the Albanian Lorna gained Belgian citizenship. She now wants to open a bar in Liege with her boyfriend Sokol . With the help of Fabio, a criminal who made her marriage of convenience possible, she now wants to marry a wealthy Russian who tries to get a Belgian passport through her quickly. He would pay Lorna well for that. However, the matter turns out to be more difficult than initially planned: A divorce from Claudy is almost impossible because it would take too much time and Claudy suddenly wants to give up drugs. Without Lorna he would be on his own and would have no chance of survival without her regular care. But the Russian pushes for a quick marriage, while Lorna tries to find a middle ground that satisfies all interests.

background

The Dardennes have dared some innovations in Lorna's silence compared to their previous works. The camera keeps more distance to the characters, there is a “scène d'amour” , and for the first time they have used music, a piece by Beethoven, in the last scene and beyond the credits so that the audience can stay with Lorna. They have also made a change from 16 mm film to 35 mm. Jérémie Renier lost 14 kilograms for the role of drug addict.

The filmmakers relate entirely to the present. “They show Belgium as a transit country for the uncontrolled flow of people, money and goods, they are designing an ugly new world without borders, neither of trade nor of morality.” Hardly ever has a film told so directly of the economy of human relationships: “A cycle of goods in which morals and emotions are matters that must be afforded. ” The barter determines society and corrupts morals and emotions. "All interpersonal relationships are geared towards their economic usability."

Voices of criticism

The film magazine epd Film wrote that the Dardennes brothers' cinema was an "elliptical art". What is not important for the inner truth of a sequence is left out. No picture or sound seem superfluous with them. Avoid the big dramatic gestures. No “groaning music, no protracted outbursts of tears, no played out inner abysses. And yet it is about everything and that in every setting. About death and life, guilt and innocence. And none of this is a matter of martyrdom or higher jurisdiction. "

Cinema described the film as “radical realism for cineastes: the viewer as a sober observer of an unsentimental narrative that requires perseverance” and came to the conclusion “oppressive art cinema with a great actress”.

Michael Ranze wrote in the Hamburger Abendblatt that the film was “a highly moral and yet very simple story about the commodity value of human relationships.” For a long time, no one had seen a film in which money was counted and handed over, hidden and paid for so often. By subordinating everything to her dream of a better life, Lorna was to blame.

The 52nd edition of the film magazine Schnitt wrote that Lorna's silence was a “lasting cinematic discourse” insofar as it did not create an open subtext, but the gloomy scenery inevitably aroused individual associations. The "contradiction in terms of content to clearly stylized film art", such as Michael Haneke creates with technically related mechanisms, characterizes the new work by Dardennes.

The Wiesbaden Film Assessment Office awarded the film the rating "Particularly valuable". The accompanying report stated: “The Dardenne brothers are once again telling masterfully about a poor sinner who, after a sincere effort, is granted grace. [...] With their frugal, brittle-looking staging, in which feelings are hardly expressed directly, but rather made perceptible subliminally, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne is again uncompromising, precisely observed and (despite its supposed artlessness) precisely calculated in its effect Film successful. "

Christina Krisch wrote in the Kronen-Zeitung on April 2, 2009 that mythical tragedy meets real struggle for survival in this film, that fearful hopes arise against sheer hopelessness. Arta Dobroshi is extremely expressive and is already being celebrated as an Audrey Hepburn of Kosovo.

Awards

At the 2008 Cannes International Film Festival , the film won the award for Best Screenplay and was nominated for the Palme d' Or. In the same year, the leading actress Arta Dobroshi was nominated for the European Film Award 2008 .
