Arta Dobroshi (born October 2, 1979 in Pristina , Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ) is a Kosovar-Albanian theater and film actress and filmmaker . She became known to a wide audience through the title role in the award-winning film Lornas Schweigen (2008) by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne .

Life

Arta Dobroshi, daughter of two intellectuals, was born in 1979 in Pristina, where she grew up. Fascinated by painting and theater as a child, she witnessed the Balkan Wars before her parents sent her to Albany , New York , USA , for several months at the age of 15 . It was there that she first came into contact with acting. After returning from the US, Dobroshi lived in Albania for a year with her mother and older brother, a director . At the age of 17 she returned to Pristina and studied acting for four years at the local art academy. She has worked as a theatrical actress in her hometown and in Sarajevo and has appeared in both classic plays such as William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and more modern works by well-known compatriots such as Ekrem Kryeziu , Ismail Kadare ( The Palace of Dreams ), the choreographer Gjergi Prevazi ( Tranzicioni ) and Almir Bukvic ( Aristotle in Baghdad ).

Parallel to her work at the theater, Dobroshi acted in a number of short films, while in 2004 she interpreted a song by Timor Dhomi for a documentary about the massacres in her home country Kosovo. With financial support from her parents, she avoided television in order to gain a foothold in Albanian films. In 2005 Dobroshi received a leading role in Kujtim Çashku's feature film Magic Eye . In the drama, she is seen alongside Bujar Lako as the friend of a television journalist (played by Alban Ukaj ), who uses the images of a family tragedy for his own benefit. In 2007, Dobroshi won the special award of the Macedonian Cinedays European Film Festival for her performance in the award-winning Albanian-German co-production .

After participating in the feature film The Sadness of Mrs. Snajdrova , the international breakthrough followed with the title role in Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's feature film Lornas Schweigen (2008). The well-known Belgian filmmakers had become aware of the Actrice through Dobroshi's previous films and an audition in Sarajevo. Although she didn't speak French , the Dardenne brothers entrusted her with the role of Lorna, who dreams of having her own snack bar in Liege . In return, through a criminal middleman, she enters into a fictitious marriage with the emaciated Belgian junkie Claudy (played by Jérémie Renier ) in order to become Belgian. The newly won husband should be quickly put out of the way so that Lorna can marry a rich Russian and provide him with the new citizenship. For the film, Dobroshi took two months of French language lessons. Lorna's silence celebrated its premiere at the 61st Cannes Film Festival , where the Albanian actress, along with the Argentinean Martina Gusmán ( Leonera ), was the favorite for the actor's award, but was left behind compared to the Brazilian Sandra Corveloni ( Linha de Passe ).

Hailed as the “new pearl of Dardennes” by the French daily Le Monde , its presentation received unanimous praise from critics in Germany too. The Süddeutsche Zeitung spoke of the still unknown leading actress as a wonderful discovery, while the Tagesspiegel highlighted Dobroshi's determined face with which she wore the film. In the same year she received a nomination for the European Film Awards 2008 for best actress for her performance .

In 2009 she was appointed to the jury of the short film section Berlinale Shorts alongside Lars Henrik Gass and director Khavn de la Cruz . Dobroshi had roles in various films and was involved as a producer on several film projects . In 2016, she made an appearance in the video for the song Come Near Me by Massive Attack .

In addition to Albanian and French, Dobroshi also speaks Bosnian and English . She lives alternately in Belgium and in Pristina. Migration, flight and displacement are important issues for her, which have also been the subject of several films:

"I am Arta Dobroshi, my nationality is happy and I live in the city called earth."

"My name is Arta Dobroshi, my nationality is happiness and I live in the city called Earth."
