Lars Henrik Gass

Lars Henrik Gass (born June 11, 1965 in Kaiserslautern ) is a German author and curator . Since October 1997 he has been director of the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival .

Life

He is the son of Peter Gass, who was head of the cultural office in Kaiserslautern for many years , and Annemarie Liebrich, who was married to the soccer player Werner Liebrich for the second time . During his school days in Kaiserslautern, he worked as a journalist for the local pages of Die Rheinpfalz . He worked in the film club Kaiserslautern's Alternative Film and was the bass player in the band Brain Trust , which broke up after three public appearances. Gass studied literature and theater studies as well as philosophy at the Free University of Berlin . He did his doctorate under Karsten Witte and Winfried Menninghaus with a study on the French writer and filmmaker Marguerite Duras , published as a book under the title Das ortlose Kino. About Marguerite Duras (2001) appeared. In 1996/97 he was managing director of the European Documentary Film Institute in Mülheim an der Ruhr , where he was editor of the series of books on documentary film as well as the magazine DOX - Documentary Film Quarterly .

Gass published numerous reviews, essays and lectures on photography, film and cultural-political issues, in particular on the phenomenology of film festivals and cinema as well as the development of culture and film funding. He held various teaching positions on film and cultural management and was guest editor of the special issue Die Zukunft der Filmfestivals von Schnitt (film magazine) . He regularly publishes a column on the online portal Filmdienst . Gass is co-editor of the volumes Provocation of Reality. The Oberhausen Manifesto and the Consequences (2012) and after youtube. From 2002 to 2007 Gass was a member of the jury of the German Short Film Award in the animation and documentary film categories , in 2009 a member of the Berlinale Shorts Jury, and from 2011 to 2013 he was on the Artistic Advisory Board of Emscherkunst . In February 2019 he became a board member of the Federal Association of Communal Film Work for one year .

Gass is committed to an unconditional basic income and to the Artabana community . He is also interested in questions about sustainability and environmental protection .
