Neil Patrick Harris
Neil Patrick Harris (born June 15, 1973 in Albuquerque , New Mexico ) is an American actor , musical performer , producer , director and magician . He was best known for starring in the television series Doogie Howser, MD (1989-1993) and for his role in How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014). His achievements brought him various awards.
Career
Harris grew up in the small town of Ruidoso in Lincoln County , New Mexico, where he played in school theater. In 1988 his parents returned to Albuquerque; that same year he made his debut in the drama Clara's Secret , in which he played the role of David Hart, for whom the housekeeper, played by Whoopi Goldberg , becomes a surrogate mother. For this role he was nominated in 1989 for the Golden Globe Award and Young Artist Award .
A passionate magician, Harris is an active member and was temporarily president of the Academy of Magical Arts . The headquarters of the Magicians' Association, Magic Castle in Hollywood, has housed the largest library of magic arts in the world since 1963 and regularly organizes competitions and performances that Harris moderated during his tenure. Although Harris never practiced magic full-time, he regularly incorporated individual magic tricks into his television shows, films and stage appearances.
Harris starred in the science fiction comedy Purple People Eater (1988), with Ned Beatty and Thora Birch in supporting roles . From 1989 to 1993 he played the lead role in the television series Doogie Howser, MD. For this role he received the Young Artist Award in 1990, 1991 and 1992 ; In 1992 he was nominated for the Golden Globe. In the science fiction film Starship Troopers (1997) he played Colonel Carl Jenkins, who worked for military intelligence. In the comedy A Friend to Love (2000) by John Schlesinger , he played alongside Madonna , Rupert Everett and Benjamin Bratt . In the comedy The Mesmerist (2002) he took the lead role.
In 1997 he played in the theater musical Rent in Los Angeles and was awarded the Drama League Award for this role in the same year . He had a supporting role in Harold & Kumar from 2004, in which he played himself. That later earned him the role of Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother , a comedy series in which he starred from 2005 to 2014, for which he won the Emmy four times in the Outstanding Supporting category between 2007 and 2010 Actor in a Comedy Series was nominated without being able to win him. In 2010 he received the Emmy in the category Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for an appearance on the series Glee and in 2011 the People's Choice Award for Favorite TV Comedy Actor .
In 2008 he starred alongside many other actors including Jack Black , John C. Reilly and Sarah Chalke in the short musical Prop 8: The Musical , which deals with the recognition of same-sex partnerships in the United States . Following the Tony Awards , Harris also hosted the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards . He also moderated in 2010 from Britain dating game show The Cube , only the pilot episode was broadcast. In the same year he staged the musical Rent in the Hollywood Bowl .
He opened the Academy Awards in 2010 and hosted the Academy Awards in 2015 . Since September 2015 he has hosted the variety show Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris on NBC . In September 2011, Harris received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the television category .
In 2011 he played a leading role on Broadway in the Musical Company , in which Jon Cryer also participated. In 2014 Harris starred in the Broadway premiere of the off-Broadway musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch , for which he received a Tony Award in 2014 . In January 2017, he starred in the Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events , for which he also served as a producer.
In 2018, Neil Patrick Harris' children's book Die Magischen 6 ( The Magic Misfits ) was published. It's about the boy Carter, who has a special talent for magic tricks. The third volume will be published in the USA on December 5, 2019. It is not the actor's first written work. In 2014 he published the novel Bro !: Follow me into my legendary life (in the English original: Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography ).
His German voice actor is currently Philipp Moog .
Private life
Harris met his husband David Burtka in 2004 through a mutual friend. Burtka later had several guest appearances alongside him on How I Met Your Mother as Lily Aldrin's affectionate ex-boyfriend Bill ("Scooter"). They also appeared together in several musicals and films, but today Burtka mainly works as chef de cuisine in his own restaurant. The couple have dizygoti twins , a boy and a girl (born October 2010), who were born by a surrogate mother. After the New York Senate legalized same-sex marriage on June 24, 2011 , Harris and Burtka announced that they had been engaged five years earlier. The two married in Italy in September 2014 .
