history

Steven Tyler's father was a trained musician. As a child, Steven was often under the piano when his father played. He later writes that this was where the harmonies for Dream On came to him. Tyler started writing Dream On when he was 17 or 18 and had worked on it intermittently for over six years. He completed it in collaboration with the other band members. Aerosmith rarely played the song at first because they wanted to establish themselves as a rock and roll band in the short time they had on stage . Joe Perry didn't like the piece at the time. In November 1971 they played it for the first time on a small gig at the Shaboo Inn , Willimantic , Connecticut .

For the first band album Aerosmith they played the song. Steven Tyler generally tried to sing a little lower so that he sounded more like colored artists. According to Tyler, Dream On was the only track on the record in which he had used his "real" voice. In an interview he later said:

"The song was so good it brought a tear to my eye."

"The song was so good that I had a tear in my eye."

When the band ran the risk of losing their record deal with Columbia Records due to lack of success , their management convinced the company to release Dream On as the group's first single . The single version differed from the album version. It was more moderate to increase the chances of being played on the radio. The single reached number 59 in the US charts in 1973. In 1976, Aerosmith manager David Krebs convinced the record company to release the piece again. This time the song reached number 6 in the US, its highest ranking to date. It stayed on the Billboard charts for a total of 29 weeks . In 1987 and 1993 the record was re-released after the band had reached a new audience through their albums.

content

Refrain
Sing with me
Sing for the year
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear
Sing it with me
If it's just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

Refrain
Sing with me
Sing for the year
Sing for laughter and sing for tears
Sing it with me
If it's only for today
Maybe God will take you away tomorrow
