Nine Lives (ger .: " Nine Lives ") is the twelfth studio album of American hard rock band Aerosmith . It was released on Columbia Records in March 1997 . It failed to build on the great success of Get a Grip , but reached number one on the Billboard 200 and remained chart-listed in the USA for 77 weeks. In Germany , it reached number three on the charts, where it stayed for 30 weeks. The third single, Pink , won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal , and Falling in Love (Is Hard on the Knees) was nominated for it in 1998. The album itself was nominated for the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album , but couldn't win it.

Aerosmith signed a multimillion dollar deal with Columbia Records without having completed the previous contract with Geffen . This meant a lot of pressure to succeed in the production of Nine Lives . For the first time after three albums produced by Bruce Fairbairn , other producers were contacted. The group initially worked with, among others, Glen Ballard , who had brought about the success of Alanis Morissette . But then it was decided to go with Kevin Shirley , who had worked for Silverchair and Journey . All songs were written with professional songwriters. By the beginning of 1998 six singles had been released, two of them as promo singles.

According to the awards, Nine Lives sold at least 6.5 million copies, which was roughly half the number of its predecessor. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of the website complained that the album sounded calculated, as if it was recorded by a band trying to sound like Aerosmith. The album is overproduced, the songs are not “catchy”. He awarded two and a half stars out of five.
