Clara's Secret (Original Title: Clara's Heart ) is an American drama from 1988 . It was directed by Robert Mulligan and the screenplay was written by Mark Medoff based on a novel by Joseph Olshan . Whoopi Goldberg played the main role .

In Baltimore Leona hard living loses her little daughter. She hires the African American Clara Mayfield, whom she met in Jamaica, as a housekeeper . Clara takes care of Leona's son David, who is considered an outsider, just like her own son. Leona and Bill's marriage is in crisis. After the divorce, Leona, David and Clara move to the country. David sees his father on the weekends, and sometimes he and Clara go on trips to Baltimore.
Clara often openly accuses Leona of not performing her role as a mother well enough. She is not intimidated by Bill either when she interferes in the conversations of the former married couple about David's future.
Clara's past hides a secret. To uncover it, David rifles through Clara's belongings. Clara gets angry, but tells a little later that she once had a son. He raped a girl at the age of 15. When Clara confronted him, he also raped his own mother and killed himself.
Leona meets a new partner who wants to move to California . David wants to live with his father in Baltimore to stay close to Clara's. Clara realizes that she has become too much of a surrogate mother for him. She quits and finds a new job in a hospital.
A little later David comes to the hospital and thanks Clara. Clara tells him that their friendship will always remain with him.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on October 21, 1988 that the film was a "bad film" with a "great character," by which he meant the character of Clara Mayfield . He described the portrayal of Whoopi Goldberg as "magnificent".
Awards
Neil Patrick Harris was established in 1989 for the film awards Golden Globe and Young Artist Award nominated. The film was also nominated for the Young Artist Award for Best Family Film - Drama .
