River basin management

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

River basin management describes a new approach to spatial planning , water management and water protection with the aim of eliminating influences on the water, the causes of which are found in the area of the catchment area. As an interdisciplinary approach, it combines different types of planning, such as municipal land-use planning, landscape plans, waterway development plans (also known as the water management concept in Austria) and flood protection .

Ecosystem background

The water and catchment area are connected by the hydrological cycle. This means that, beginning with the impact of precipitation on the earth's surface or vegetation , processes begin, the effects of which are later noticeable in the water. Human influences on the various properties of our landscape affect these processes and thus change the chemistry of water or its quantitative distribution to evaporation , surface runoff and groundwater .

Sociopolitical background

Human activities in the landscape are increasingly influencing the shape, properties and behavior of our waters. In addition to ecological constraints and considerations, economic reasons also play a special role, as water is important for our economy in many ways and thus sustainable use is in the interests of society. The intensive use of the floodplains leads to the embankment of the rivers, so that the flood runoff is controlled on a significantly reduced area. The Water Framework Directive of the European Union (Regulation) is in Europe the basis for a stronger coordination of all activities related to water on an interdisciplinary and international level.

developments

As part of the ILUP - Integrated Land Use Planning and River Basin Management project , concepts for river basin management are currently being developed on a national and European level.
