Doogie Howser, MD is an American television series produced for ABC from 1989 to 1993 . In Germany, the series was shown on ProSieben from 1991 . The series is about a boy who was already practicing as a doctor at the age of 16 and was going through puberty at the same time .
content
The gifted Douglas "Doogie" Howser is a child prodigy . Thanks to his photographic memory , he graduated from high school at nine , graduated from Princeton University at ten, and completed his medical degree four years later. At the age of 14 he becomes the youngest doctor in the country.
The series begins with Doogie's 16th birthday. He works as an intern at Eastman Medical Center in Los Angeles and is slowly growing up. Each episode ends with Howser keeping his computer diary with the characteristic theme song in the background.
background
The series was inspired by the story of Howard A. Zucker, MD, JD (Chairman of the New York State Health Department since 2015 ), who was a doctor at the age of 22.
The fifteen-year-old leading actor Neil Patrick Harris had his first major breakthrough as a young actor through the series. After the series ended, he returned to relative anonymity with theater and small film roles, before a second and final international breakthrough followed with How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014).
MD
In the medical context, the title MD is associated with the salutation “Doctor” ( only “Doctor XY”, not as in German “Frau / Herr Dr. XY” or outdated “Frau / Herr Doktor”). It denotes the professional doctorate awarded in the United States after completing a medical degree . Unlike the research doctoral degrees behind the German title Dr. med. and the British MD (medicinae doctor) , the US-American MD is not associated with writing and defending a scientific doctoral thesis .
Doogie Howser in pop culture
Doogie Howser has made its way into American pop culture in many places . In many films and television series (including Friends , Roseanne , the Simpsons , Hangover 2 and Gilmore Girls ) as well as in common parlance, the term “Doogie” (rarely also “Doogie Howser”) is sometimes used to refer to someone with a little disdain who, in the sayer's opinion, is not old enough to do his job properly. In the film 50/50 - Friends for Life , Adam compares his 24-year-old doctor to Doogie Howser. In the Castle episode Bank Robbery (season 4, episode 65), one of the bank robbers uses Doogie Howser as a cover name.
occupation
The synchronization of the series was created at Arena Synchron from dialogue books and under the dialogue direction of Norbert Steinke.
