James Barrie Sikking (born March 5, 1934 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American actor .

Life

James Barrie Sikking is the son of Sue Sikking, the founder of Santa Monica's Unity-by-the-Sea Church . He grew up with his two brothers and sister in his native Los Angeles . His third brother Robert "Bob" Paxton Sikking (1922–1988) served in the 101st Airborne Division during World War II and was thus the inspiration for the television series Band of Brothers produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks . James Sikking attended El Segundo High School and later studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara , UCLA and the University of Hawaii .

His interest in acting began during his student days, so he made his screen debut in the western Five Revolvers Going West in 1955 , an unnamed extra who was not mentioned in the credits. Sikking was to play such roles frequently before he gradually made his breakthrough in the early 1970s and his roles became more prominent. He played in Scorpio, the Killer , Outland - Planet of the Damned and as Federation Captain Styles in Star Trek III: In Search of Mr. Spock . At the same time, he played regularly in series, with his most important roles, those of Lt. Howard Hunter, whom he played in 140 episodes of the Hill Street Police Station from 1981 to 1987 , and the character of Dr. David Howser, whom he impersonated in 90 episodes of Doogie Howser, MD , from 1989 to 1993 .

James Sikking was married to Mary Roanne Blakeman from 1953 to 1954, with whom he has one child. He has been married to Florine Caplan since September 1, 1962, with whom he has two children.
