The convicted criminals William & John Candy, SV Haggard, Hale Clinton and Govern Sturges are pardoned in the final days of the US Civil War to perform a special task on behalf of the Confederation . They are supposed to prevent the spy Stephan Jethro from handing over a secret document to the US secret service. Jethro is also said to be carrying stolen gold coins worth $ 30,000 that must be secured. Finally, Jethro is to be brought before a court martial . Jethro traveling with a coach , accompanied by a US - escort .

The group makes their way to the former mining town of Downsprings, which is only used as a stagecoach station to ambush the stagecoach there. During the arduous ride, Govern naturally takes the lead over the group. Meanwhile, Hale tries to play off the other criminals against each other and to find out where there are possible sympathies and dislikes. The ride leads through Indian territory, here Johnny demonstrates his skill with a knife when he silently stabs an Indian scout. Arriving in Downsprings, the group is expected by the suspicious Shaleen and her alcoholic Uncle Bob. Since the carriage hasn't arrived yet, the five gangsters are waiting at the station. To find out what the men are up to, Shaleen first flirts with Hale, from whom she receives no information. When she searches Billy's saddlebags, she is discovered by him. She flirts a bit with Billy, questions him and learns about the gang's plan to rob the carriage on behalf of the southern states . Shaleen now knows the gangsters' plan and wants to warn the carriage, it sneaks out of the house during the night, but is stopped by Goven. After a kiss, he sends the girl back into the house. Hale has watched the scene and tries to take advantage of Govern's apparent sympathy for Shaleen. He suggests Goven shoot the others after the attack. He would then put up with the gold while Govern could have the girl.

When the carriage arrives, the gang shoots the escort and gets Jethro out of the carriage. However, he deposited the gold coins in a bank and therefore not there. Govern only secures the secret document. Hale exposes Govern for his behavior as a southern officer who does not value gold. Since Govern Jethro wants to bring Jethro to court, but the other four gangsters need the spy to get the gold, a dispute ensues. Govern holed up in the hut with Jethro, Bob and Shaleen. The rest of the gang are waiting outside for the right opportunity to attack. Shaleen admits to Govern how impressed she is with him that night.

The next morning Billy goes crazy and storms blindly towards the house - Govern shoots him. Shaken, Johnny sees Billy's death, slowly takes off the seat belt and walks unarmed to the corpse, knowing that Govern would not shoot an unarmed person. After getting to his brother's, he takes his revolver and rushes forward. Govern can't react so quickly, so Johnny gets under the floor of the hut. He crawls under the house and shoots through the floor planks from below. The trapped manage to get to the door unharmed, Govern also crawls under the house and kills Billy. Haggard flees, he sees no more possibility of getting the gold and just wants to save his life. In the meantime, Hale has brought Shaleen, Bob and Jethro into his power, but is outwitted by Govern. Govern rides back south with the war criminal, not without promising Shaleen to come back.

criticism

"Roger Corman's first directorial work is a narrative, but never exceeding the average of the genre Western, which is noticeable at most because he is emphatically tough for the time it was made."
