Today the escort in Germany, also known as an honorary escort , is part of the police escort (also escort command) during state visits , but in some cases also at state funerals . The police escort and traffic command are provided by the locally responsible state police . The escort driver ( motorbike ), top and bottom vehicle as well as the operational management of the escort and traffic command (police leader of the operation (PFdE)) are provided by the traffic police , the actual personal protection by the local LKA and possibly by the BKA (security group). Furthermore, state guests can also deploy their own personal protection forces. Vehicles of the protocol ( State Chancellery ), ambassadors and other escorts are also lined up within the escort unit . Taken as a whole, this is referred to as the wagon sequence in protocol usage, the order being precisely defined here. The escort unit drives as a closed unit . This is privileged with the special rights according to § 35 StVO in road traffic, under special conditions of § 38 Abs. 1 StVO the blue flashing light with the emergency horn may also be used.

The escort driver's job is

  • the honorary accompaniment and
  • the protection of the state guest during the journey (defense against danger ).
  • In emergencies that require a sudden deviation from main or alternate routes, the escort takes over the task of the traffic police in advance.

The escort usually drives in a wedge shape in front of the visitor's vehicle. The last escort driver of the formation will only accompany the vehicle of the guest of honor to the side in rare cases (15 motorcyclists, slow drive, wide road on a straight stretch).

In Germany, military police officers of the Bundeswehr are used instead of the police escort and escort drivers in the following cases:

  • 1/3 escort: owner of a command (commander in chief of the armed forces, civil department heads in the Ministry of Defense)
  • 1/5 escort: State Secretaries in the Ministry of Defense, NATO Commander-in-Chief, National Commander-in-Chief (Deputy Defense Minister, Minister of the Armed Forces, Undersecretaries of State in the Ministry of Defense and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces as a whole)
  • 1/7 escort: Minister of Defense and Supreme Commander

The strength indication 1/3, 1/5 and 1/7 means that an escort officer and 3, 5 and 7 motorcyclists (1 top driver and 2, 4 and 6 escort drivers) form the escort.

Motorcycle escort in special cases

As a special police tactic, the traffic escort is carried out for the fast and smooth transport of seriously injured or seriously ill people as well as public VIPs from a location such as a hospital to another, mostly specialized clinic or from an airport to a conference location with a traffic escort with motorcyclists in front to regulate traffic.
