Trapped in icy depths (Alternative title: Submerged - trapped in icy depths , original title: Submerged ) is a film drama by James Keach in 2001 by James Keach with Sam Neill in the lead role. The television film is a film adaptation of the book The Terrible Hours by Peter Maas .

The film shows a true story from 1939 in the United States. The submarine USS Squalus is sailing out on its maiden voyage. The designer hides technical problems that he is aware of. The boat is sinking. The divers, led by Lt. Cmdr Charles B. Momsen conduct a rescue operation that lasts 27 hours. 33 of the 59 crew members of the submarine are rescued.

The drama was shot in Malta and produced by the National Broadcasting Company . The special effects were supplied by Gajdecki Visual Effects (GVFX). It was first broadcast on US television on NBC on May 20, 2001, and in Germany on May 26, 2003.

To depict the USS Squalus on the surface of the water, the creators used a slightly modified model of a German type VII C submarine , which has significant differences to the real Squalus / Sailfish.
