Harold & Kumar (Original title: Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle ) is an American buddy film with elements of the Stoner movie from 2004. The main characters are John Cho and Kal Penn .

action

Harold is an Asian-American investment banker who is on a low level in his company and has two of his colleagues stock up on work that one of them should do. His roommate Kumar, who, according to his father, who comes from India , wants to become a doctor, is medically talented, but unmotivated and, in contrast to the orderly Harold, quite untidy.

The two of them were sitting in front of the TV one evening thinking about what to eat when they saw a commercial for hamburger from White Castle that made them decide to go there.

But the journey there will not be as easy as it was planned. The New Brunswick branch they originally wanted to go to was closed; An employee of the burger shop, who is now in their place, gives them the tip to try Cherry Hill, a little further away . On their way there they meet several nasty gang hooligans with whom the two - even before the trip - have arguments again and again, a biting raccoon, happens to be in an operation in a hospital, comes across the biblical leper Randy, called " Freakshow ”, and his pretty wife and Neil Patrick Harris , who, intoxicated with ecstasy , steals her car. Furthermore, Harold is temporarily locked in prison by racist police officers. Harold manages to break out of prison with Kumar's help. The will to enjoy the perfect burger drives them to the end, so that the two even ride a cheetah and fly for the first time with a hang glider , until they finally make it to the next "White Castle". There they meet Neil again, who gives them back their car and gives them food.

The night also has an impact on the personalities of the friends: The shy, exploited Harold manages to tell his colleagues his opinion so that in the future he will probably no longer be made to do their work by them. In addition, he overcomes speaking to his dream woman Maria. Kumar decides to become a doctor after all.

The film ends with the two of them deciding to follow Maria, who has to go to Amsterdam for ten days .

background

Production costs were estimated at nine million dollars . The film grossed approximately $ 18.2 million in US cinemas.

The two main actors are voiced in the German dubbing by the comedians Oliver Pocher (Harold) and Rick Kavanian (Kumar).

Reviews

The lexicon of international film called the film "a thin comedy full of stereotypes and worn out scenes, in which a little situational comedy rarely flashes".

In the US press, the film was received largely benevolently. Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times that he had to laugh so often that he even considered watching director Danny Leiner's previous film , Dude, where's my car? , to watch. Allison Benedikt of the Chicago Tribune found the humor disgusting and immature, but praised the leading actors and recommended the film to younger people who are not entirely new to cannabis use. She particularly emphasized the importance of the film for the depicted ethnic minorities, who not only provide amusement as secondary characters, but are the stars of the film.

Awards

John Cho and Kal Penn were in 2005 for singing the song Hold On for the Teen Choice Award nominations. They were also nominated for the MTV Movie Award in 2005 in two categories .

The sequels

The duo's second adventure is entitled Harold & Kumar 2 - Escape from Guantanamo (originally Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay ) and was produced on a budget of 12 million US dollars. It was released in US cinemas on April 25, 2008. The third part, entitled Harold & Kumar - All Years Again , hit US cinemas on November 4, 2011.

Others

In reality, there is no White Castle chain fast-food restaurant in Cherry Hill town. The scenes were filmed in a meanwhile empty fast-food restaurant in Caledon , Ontario.
