action

The "globally ignored Chanteuse" Hedwig, who travels through America as a rock and roll drag queen with husband Yitzhak and a band, tells the audience her story like a psychotherapy.

Growing up in East Berlin “on the wrong side of the wall”, the androgynous Hansel Schmidt allows himself to be transformed into a woman (Hedwig) out of love for the GI Luther, in order to come from the GDR through marriage. But the sex reassignment process goes catastrophically wrong: the drunken surgeon's knife turns out to be as blunt as the life from which Hansel tries to escape. What remains is the eponymous "Angry Inch" - an "angry inch" that reminds Hedwig that she may never belong entirely to one side.

Hedwig experienced November 9, 1989 penniless and abandoned by her "Sugar Daddy" in a run-down trailer park in Kansas. While reunification is taking place in her former home, Hedwig is far from her inner unity and gender identity. In one of the babysitting jobs she does to keep her head above water, she meets a pimply boy named Tommy Speck, a Jesus freak whom she teaches about music and entertainment. She gives him the stage name "Tommy Gnosis" and now writes songs for him in the rancid caravan that breathe the spirit of glam rock of the 70s and are about the search for love and fulfillment. However, the apparent luck does not last long, and Hedwig is betrayed again. Tommy Gnosis lets them sit and celebrate themselves as a superstar with the stolen songs. For Hedwig and her thrown together band, on the other hand, there is only a stale copy of a low-budget tour; following Tommy Gnosis' tour which also takes her to the performing theater.
