The Breeders are an American alternative rock band formed in 1988 as a side project of Kim Deal of the Pixies and Tanya Donelly of the Throwing Muses . They were joined by British bassist Josephine Wiggs and Slint's drummer Britt Walford, under the pseudonym "Shannon Dorton".
history
Foundation and naming
Dissatisfied with her subordinate role as bassist with the Pixies, Kim Deal teamed up with Tanya Donelly, who was also unhappy with her role with the Throwing Muses, in 1988. The two musicians chose The Breeders as the name for their band, originally planned as a side project, which Deal had already used for a band with their sister Kelley before the Pixies . The term ' breeders' is a derogatory term used by homosexuals for heterosexuals in English.
Pod and Last Splash
For the first album, Deal and Donelly recruited British bassist Josephine Wiggs from the band The Perfect Disaster and Britt Walford (under the pseudonym Shannon Doughton) from Slint on drums. Pod was produced by Steve Albini and recorded in Edinburgh during a UK tour of the Pixies . The style of the album is based on that of the Pixies, with loud guitars, threatening melodies and uncompromising lyrics. The song “Hellbound” is written from the perspective of an aborted fetus, while “Iris” graphically describes the female menstruation.
After the recording of Pod , the band members dealt with their respective main bands again. It was not until 1992 that further recordings followed, in which Kim's sister Kelley Deal took part as an additional guitarist for the first time, although she first had to learn the instrument. The four resulting songs were released as an EP under the name Safari .
After the Pixies split up, Kim Deal recruited drummer Jim Macpherson from the local band scene in her hometown of Dayton, Ohio , finally making the Breeders a full-fledged band. However, Donelly left the band because, like the Throwing Muses, she felt too little attention. In the line-up of Deal / Deal / Wiggs / Macpherson, the Breeders completed their first top-class concerts in 1992 by playing for Nirvana as the opening act on their European tour. In 1993 the Breeders' most commercially successful album, Last Splash , came out with the hit single Cannonball , whose music video was directed by Spike Jonze . The album was also praised by the critics, who praised Kim Deal's mature songwriting qualities, and made the band real alternative rock stars. In 1994, Last Splash was awarded platinum by the RIAA for over one million units sold.
Later years
In the following years the Breeders toured extensively and then devoted themselves to other projects; Kim Deal z. B. the band The Amps. It was not until 2002 that the album Title TK was released , with new members taking part again.
On April 4, 2008, the band released the album Mountain Battles , on which, in addition to pieces in English, you can also find titles in German and Spanish.
In 2012, the Breeders formed again in the line-up that had recorded the album Last Splash . In this classic line with the Deal sisters, Wiggs and Macpherson, the band went on tour to the published in the following year 20 th Anniversary Edition of Last Splash to promote. As a result, the Breeders worked on new songs, finally releasing the first studio album in ten years on March 2, 2018. All Nerve was released like all of the band's other studio albums on the British independent label 4AD and contains eleven tracks, including the single Wait In The Car , which was released in 2017. The new work was received positively by the critics, AllMusic and Rolling Stone awarded 4 out of a possible 5 stars and the Record Collector even 5 out of 5.
