4AD is an independent label for independent and alternative music in Great Britain .

history

4AD was founded in 1980 by Ivo Watts-Russell and Peter Kent with the support of Beggars Banquet Records under the name Axis Records , but changed its name to 4AD a short time later, as Axis was already being used by another company in the music industry. In 1980 Peter Kent left 4AD to start his own record company, Situation Two Records . A short time later, Ivo Watts-Russell began to work with the graphic artist Vaughan Oliver , whose visually independent work complemented the artistic and atmospheric music that was appearing on 4AD at the time. In the mid-1980s, 4AD became widely known outside of Great Britain with its flagship products This Mortal Coil , Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance .

In the second half of the 1980s, 4AD diversified with American alternative - rock bands such as the Throwing Muses and Pixies or English guitar rock bands like Lush .

At the beginning of the 1990s, 4AD expanded its activities in North America with the establishment of a branch in Los Angeles and achieved success with the Breeders and the Red House Painters . In 1999 Ivo Watts-Russell sold his shares to the Beggar's Group , which had emerged from Beggar's Banquet Records and which continues the label with artists such as Blonde Redhead , TV on the Radio and Scott Walker .
