Kristin Hersh (* 7. August 1966 in Atlanta , Georgia , as Martha Kristin Hersh ) is an American singer , guitarist and songwriter who primarily by the indie rock band Throwing Muses became known.

Kristin Hersh was born in Atlanta as the daughter of philosophy professor William James Hersh ( Salve Regina University ), but grew up in Newport , Rhode Island . At nine she learned to play the guitar and was taught songwriting by her father. In the early 80s, she formed the band Throwing Muses with her stepsister Tanya Donelly . With this band she achieved an international breakthrough in the indie rock scene. In 1994 she also began a solo career. In 2008 she released individual tracks of 11 songs under a Creative Commons non-commercial license at ccMixter . As of July 4, 2014, 162 remixes were created from it.

Hersh is married to one of her managers, Billy O'Connell, and has four sons.
