Michael Stipe
John Michael Stipe (born January 4, 1960 in Decatur , Georgia , USA ) is an American singer , songwriter , film producer and founding member, singer and creative head of the American alternative rock band REM
Life
Stipe's childhood was marked by many moves because his father worked in the military. Stipe also lived in Hanau in Germany in 1967/68 .
In 1980, while he was studying art and photography at the University of Athens (Georgia) , he met Mike Mills , Peter Buck and Bill Berry , with whom he formed the band REM after dropping out. Within a few years, the formation achieved fame in the independent scene and was one of the first bands to also have great success in the mainstream . At the same time, he co-founded the band Tanzplagen in 1980 , to which he belonged until the end of 1981, parallel to the main REM project.
Michael Stipe worked with various other artists, for example with Patti Smith (with her, for example, the song E-Bow the Letter was written ), Natalie Merchant and Kristin Hersh u. a. to the song Your Ghost . He had known Hersh since childhood but lost sight of her. Only when both Stipe with REM and Hersh with the Throwing Muses were already established did they meet again. He was also a good friend of the late Kurt Cobain and his wife Courtney Love . Stipe is the godfather of Frances Bean Cobain, their daughter.
In addition to his musical career, Michael Stipe is also socially and politically active and active as an artist (including photography and film art ). He is co-owner of the film production company Single Cell Pictures, which produced the movies Velvet Goldmine , Being John Malkovich and American Movie , among others .
Stipe considers himself a queer artist , according to an article published in Time in 2001 . Although many media viewed an interview with Spin in March 2008 as a public commitment to his homosexuality , both Spin (with reference to the older article from Time ) and Stipe himself distance themselves from this interpretation. Stipe posted a video on People's website in response to this heteronormative search for an outing in which he congratulated his band mates on their courageous commitment to heterosexuality.
Since October 2014 he has been teaching at the Steinhardt Department of Art and Art Professions at New York University .
Michael Stipe currently lives (as of 2020) in Berlin.
