Decatur is a city and also the county seat of DeKalb County in the US state of Georgia with 19,335 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Decatur borders directly on the city of Atlanta in the west and on the city of Avondale Estates within the metropolitan area of Atlanta in the east .
history
Decatur was founded in 1823. The city name is reminiscent of the American national hero Stephen Decatur junior .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 19,335 inhabitants at the time were distributed over 8,599 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.17 people per household. There are a total of 9,335 households.
52.8% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 2.96 persons. Children under the age of 18 lived in 29.5% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 21.1% of all households.
25.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 29.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 16.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 43.6% of the population were male and 56.4% were female.
73.5% of the population identified themselves as whites , 20.2% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 2.9% as Asian Americans . 0.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.4% to several ethnic groups. 3.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

Decatur is traversed by US Highways 23 , 29 , 78 and 278 and Georgia State Route 155 . The city is also connected to the metro network of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority via one station. The nearest airport is Atlanta Airport (around 20 km southwest).

The Decatur City School District stretches across the city and maintains educational facilities from preschool through twelfth grade, which consists of four elementary schools , fourth and fifth grade academies, one middle school and one high school .
The DeKalb County School District covers the unincorporated areas, serves in DeKalb County around Decatur and operates the prestigious William Bradley Bryant Center (WBBC) in a partnership.
