Leslie Jasper Steele

Leslie Jasper Steele (born November 21, 1868 in Decatur , Georgia , †  July 24, 1929 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1927 and 1929 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Leslie Steele attended both public and private schools. He then studied until 1893 at Emory College , Oxford . Between 1893 and 1898 Steele worked as a teacher. After studying law at the University of Georgia in Athens and being admitted to the bar in 1899, Steele began working in his new profession in Decatur. From 1902 to 1921 he was a member of the DeKalb County Education Committee .

Steele was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1915 and 1920 he was mayor of Decatur. At the same time he served as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1915 to 1919 . Between 1921 and 1925 he worked as a district attorney. In the 1926 congressional elections he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the fifth constituency of Georgia, where he succeeded William D. Upshaw on March 4, 1927 . After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his death on July 24, 1929 . After a by-election, his mandate fell to Robert Ramspeck . Leslie Steele was married to Rubie Sprayberrie (1885-1967) since 1904, with whom he had eight children.
