Benjamin Taliaferro

Benjamin Taliaferro (born 1750 in Amherst County , Colony of Virginia , †  September 3, 1821 in Wilkes County , Georgia ) was an American politician . Between 1799 and 1802 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

The exact date of birth of Benjamin Taliaferro is unknown. He attended the local schools in his homeland. He then took part as a soldier in the War of Independence , in which he achieved the rank of captain. In 1780 he was taken prisoner by the British. From 1785 Taliaferro was based in Georgia. There he began a political career. He became a member and president of the State Senate . In 1798 he was a delegate at a meeting to revise the state constitution. Politically, he was initially a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton . He later moved to the Democratic Republican Party of President Thomas Jefferson .

In the state-wide held congressional election of 1798 , he was elected as a federal candidate for the second seat of Georgia in the US House of Representatives. There he took over from John Milledge on March 4, 1799 . In 1800 he was re-elected as the Democratic Republican . Benjamin Taliaferro resigned prematurely from this mandate in 1802. During his time in Congress , the seat of government was relocated to the new capital Washington, DC .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Taliaferro was a Superior Court judge ; he was also a curator at the University of Georgia .
