Iris Faircloth Blitch (born April 25, 1912 in Vidalia , Georgia , † August 9, 1993 in San Diego , California ) was an American politician and represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Iris Faircloth Blitch attended the University of Georgia in Athens in 1929 and South Georgia College in Douglas in 1949 . She then worked with her husband in the pharmaceuticals, marine warehouses and agriculture sectors in Homerville .

Blitch was then elected to the Georgia Senate, and then in 1948 to the state's House of Representatives . She lost her re-election to the House of Representatives in 1950, but was then re-elected to the State Senate in the 1952 election. She worked there until December 31, 1954. She was also a member of the Democratic National Committee of Georgia between 1948 and 1956 .

Blitch was elected to the House of Representatives as the Democratic MP for Georgia's 8th Congressional District. It won the election in the 84th and three subsequent Congresses. During this time she was involved in the constitution of the Southern Manifesto in 1956 , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions. Blitch decided not to run again for Congress in 1962.

After her political career, Blitch lived on St. Simons Island , Georgia before moving to San Diego, California in 1988. She died in San Diego on August 9, 1993. She was buried in Pinelawn Cemetery in Homerville, Georgia.
