John James Jones

John James Jones (born September 13, 1824 in Waynesboro , Burke County , Georgia , †  October 19, 1898 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1861 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Jones was born on September 13, 1824, according to his tombstone. He attended Waynesboro Academy and then until 1845 Emory College , Oxford . After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1848, he began to work in Waynesboro in his new profession.

Politically, Jones was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1858 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Alexander H. Stephens on March 4, 1859 . He remained a member of Congress until his resignation on January 23, 1861 . This time was determined by the tensions in the immediate run-up to the civil war . He resigned because his home state Georgia had decided to leave the Union.

During the ensuing civil war John Jones lieutenant was in the army of the Confederacy . After the war, he returned to work as a lawyer in Burke County. He died on October 19, 1898 in his hometown of Waynesboro. John Jones was married to Evelina Toombs Jones (1830-1900); the couple had two children.
