Marvin Dawson Mathis (born November 30, 1940 in Nashville , Georgia - † April 17, 2017 in Tifton , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1971 and 1981 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Dawson Mathis attended the public schools in his home country and then studied at South Georgia College in Douglas . Between 1964 and 1970 he was news director of the television company WALB-TV in Albany .

Politically, Mathis joined the Democratic Party . In the 1970 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Maston E. O'Neal on January 3, 1971 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1981 . During this time, among other things, the end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair fell .

In 1980 Dawson Mathis sought unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the US Senate elections ; The primary winner was incumbent Herman Talmadge . After that, Mathias withdrew from politics. In the following years he worked as a private lawyer.
