William Terrell

William Terrell (born 1788 in Fairfax County , Virginia , †  July 4, 1855 in Sparta , Georgia ) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1821 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Neither the exact date of birth nor the place of birth of William Terrell are known. What is certain is that he was born in Fairfax County, Virginia in 1788. He moved to Georgia with his parents at an early age, where he received a good education. Terrell then studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia . After becoming a doctor, he began practicing his new profession in Sparta, Georgia.

Terrell was a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by President Thomas Jefferson . Between 1810 and 1813 he was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives . He also held various local offices in his home country. In the state-wide held congressional elections of 1816 he was elected for the sixth mandate from Georgia to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Thomas Telfair on March 4, 1817 . After re-election in 1818, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1821 .

In 1820, William Terrell decided not to run for the US House of Representatives again. Instead, he withdrew from politics. In the following years he practiced as a doctor again. He died on July 4, 1855 in Sparta and was buried there.
