Andrew Sloan

Andrew Sloan (born June 10, 1845 in McDonough , Georgia , †  September 22, 1883 in Silver City , New Mexico Territory ) was an American lawyer and politician . In 1874 and 1875 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Andrew Sloan attended public schools in his home country including Marshall College , Griffin . He then continued his education at Bethany College in West Virginia . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1866, he began to work in this profession. In the same year he became a prosecutor in Henry County . After moving to Savannah , he became Deputy Head of Customs in 1867. After that he practiced as a lawyer in this city too. In 1869, Sloan became an assistant federal attorney . He then worked as a district attorney until 1872 . At the same time he was a local advisor to the federal government in relation to claims arising from cotton sales. He also advised a British-American commission that dealt with mutual claims from the Civil War .

Politically, Sloan was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1872 he was defeated by the Democrat Morgan Rawls . Sloan appealed against the outcome of this election. After this was granted, he was able to take over the mandate of the first constituency of Georgia in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC on March 24, 1874 and end the current legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1875. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Sloan withdrew from politics. In 1881 he moved to Silver City in what is now New Mexico state . He died there on September 22, 1883.
