William Chester Lankford

William Chester Lankford (born December 7, 1877 in Clinch County , Georgia , †  December 10, 1964 in Twin Lakes , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1919 and 1933 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Lankford attended the public schools in his home country and then worked as a teacher in his home district himself for several years. He then graduated from the Jasper Normal Institute in Jasper ( Florida ) until 1897 . He then attended the Georgia Normal College and Business Institute in Abbeville until 1900 . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Georgia in Athens and his admission as a lawyer in 1901, he began to work in Douglas in his new profession. In 1906 he was elected mayor of that city. Between 1907 and 1918 Lankford served on his hometown education committee. There he also worked as a judge from 1908 to 1916.

Politically, Lankford was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1916 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress . In the 1918 congressional elections he was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Georgia in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded John Randall Walker on March 4, 1919 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1933 . During this time the 18th , 19th and 20th amendments to the constitution were passed. This involved the prohibition law that was repealed at the end of 1933 , the nationwide introduction of women's suffrage and the bringing forward of the beginning of the legislative periods of the Congress and the presidential term. The latter amendment was passed shortly before the end of Lankford's final term.

In 1932, William Lankford was no longer nominated for re-election in Congress by his party. In the following years he worked again as a lawyer. Between 1935 and 1942 he worked for the Federal General Accounting Office . Then he retired. William Lankford died on December 10, 1964 in Twin Lakes and was buried in Douglas.
