George Elliott Hagan
George Elliott Hagan (born May 24, 1916 in Sylvania , Screven County , Georgia , † December 26, 1990 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1961 and 1973 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .
Career
George Hagan attended the public schools in his home country and then studied at the University of Georgia . He then began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . As a result, he was elected five times to the Georgia House of Representatives and once to the State Senate. During the Second World War he was a soldier in the US Army for two years . After the war, Hagan held various local offices in Georgia. In 1951 and 1952, he was the District Director of the Price Stability Board in southern Georgia. He was also a member of the National Council of State Governments . Hagan was also active in the life insurance industry and in agriculture, especially in livestock. He was also the curator of Tift College .
In the 1960 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Prince Hulon Preston on January 3, 1961 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1973 . During this time, the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement took place .
In 1972 Hagan was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. Then he withdrew from politics. He spent the last years of his life in his native Sylvania, where he died in December 1990.
