Dudley Mays Hughes (born October 10, 1848 in Jeffersonville , Twiggs County , Georgia , †  January 20, 1927 in Macon , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1909 and 1917 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Dudley Hughes attended public schools in his home country and then studied at the University of Georgia in Athens until 1870 . Then he started working in agriculture. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He served in the Georgia Senate in 1882 and 1883 . Between 1904 and 1906 he was President of the Georgia Agricultural Society. In 1904 he represented his state at the World's Fair in St. Louis . He was also president of the Georgia Fruit Growers Association , the state association of fruit growers. Hughes also acted as the curator of several educational institutions. This also included the University of Georgia . In addition to these activities, he was involved in the planning and development of the Macon, Dublin & Savannah Railroad , of which he was president from 1885 to 1891.

In the 1908 congressional elections , Hughes was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded Elijah B. Lewis on March 4, 1909 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1917 . Since 1913, however, he represented the newly created twelfth district of his state there. During his time in the US House of Representatives, the 16th and 17th amendments were passed there. From 1913 to 1917 Hughes was chairman of the education committee.

In the run-up to the 1916 congressional election , Hughes was not nominated for re-election by his party. In the following years he worked in agriculture in Danville . He died in Macon on January 20, 1927.
