Charles Murphey

Charles Murphey (born May 9, 1799 in Anderson , Anderson County , South Carolina , †  January 16, 1861 in Decatur , Georgia ) was an American politician . Between 1851 and 1853 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Murphey attended public schools in his home country. After studying law and his admission as a lawyer in 1825, he began to work in Decatur in his new profession. From 1825 to 1827 he was also a court usher in the local DeKalb County .

Murphey was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1839 to 1841 ; between 1842 and 1856 he was a member of the State Senate several times . In the congressional election of 1850 he was elected as a unionist in the fourth constituency of Georgia in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Hugh A. Haralson on March 4, 1851 . Until March 3, 1853, he had only one term in Congress .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Murphey turned to the Democratic Party . In 1860 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore . Otherwise he worked as a lawyer. Charles Murphey died on January 16, 1861 in Decatur and was buried there.
