The county is located in northwest South Carolina, borders Georgia to the southwest and has an area of ​​1962 square kilometers, of which 102 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pickens County , Greenville County , Laurens County , Abbeville County , Elbert County, Georgia, Hart County, Georgia, and Oconee Counties .

history

Anderson County was formed on December 20, 1826 from parts of the Pendleton District. It was named after Robert Anderson , an officer in the American Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Anderson County had 165,740 people in 649 households and 400 families. The population density was 89 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.56 percent white, 16.59 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.42 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.40 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.79 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.11 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
