Anderson County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Anderson .

The county is located in northwest South Carolina, borders Georgia to the southwest and has an area of 1962 square kilometers, of which 102 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pickens County , Greenville County , Laurens County , Abbeville County , Elbert County, Georgia, Hart County, Georgia, and Oconee Counties .

Anderson County was formed on December 20, 1826 from parts of the Pendleton District. It was named after Robert Anderson , an officer in the American Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Anderson County had 165,740 people in 649 households and 400 families. The population density was 89 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.56 percent white, 16.59 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.42 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.40 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.79 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.11 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 65,649 households, 31.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.0 percent were married couples living together, 12.8 percent were single mothers, 28.0 percent were non-families, 24.3 percent were single households, and 9.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.94.
24.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.4 percent between 18 and 24, 29.1 percent between 25 and 44, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,807 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,229. Males had a median income of $ 32,316 versus $ 23,834 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,365. 9.1 percent of families and 12.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
