Marion County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Marion .

The county is located in northeast South Carolina, is about 15 km to the north from North Carolina and has an area of ​​1,280 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Dillon County , Horry County , Georgetown County , Williamsburg County, and Florence County .

history

The county was formed on March 12, 1785 and was then called Liberty County . On January 1, 1800 it was given its current name and has been an independent county since April 16, 1868. It was named after Francis Marion , also known as Swamp Fox , a brigadier general in the South Carolina militia in the American Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Marion County had 35,466 people in 13,301 households and 9,510 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 41.69 percent white, 56.35 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.90 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.79 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 13,301 households, 32.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.3 percent were married couples living together, 23.6 percent were single mothers, 28.5 percent were non-families, 25.4 percent were single households, and 9.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.16.

27.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 9.7 percent between 18 and 24, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 85.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 80.4 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,526 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,932. Males had a median income of $ 26,133 versus $ 18,392 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,878. 18.9 percent of families and 23.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
