Richland County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Columbia .

The county is located on the geographic center of South Carolina and has an area of ​​1999 square kilometers, of which 40 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Fairfield County , Kershaw County , Sumter County , Calhoun County , Lexington County, and Newberry County .

history

Richland County was formed in 1785. It was named after the abundant good soil that favored the cultivation of cotton and the indigo plant .

The South Carolina State House is one of five National Historic Landmarks in the county.

Five places in the county have National Historic Landmark status . 158 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 29, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Richland County had 320,677 people in 120,101 households and 76,384 families. The population density was 164 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 50.29 percent white, 45.16 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 1.72 percent Asian, 0.08 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.35 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.72 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.05.

24.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 13.8 percent between 18 and 24, 31.6 percent between 25 and 44, 20.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 9.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 89.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 39,961 , and the median income for a family was $ 49,466. Males had a median income of $ 34,346 versus $ 25,909 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,794. 10.1 percent of families and 13.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
