Williamsburg County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Kingstree .

The county is located in eastern South Carolina, about 45 km to the southeast from the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of ​​2,427 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Florence County , Marion County , Georgetown County , Berkeley County, and Clarendon County .

history

Williamsburg County was formed on March 12, 1785 and dissolved on January 1, 1800. In 1804 Williamsburg became a judicial district and again a county on April 16. It was named either after King Wilhelm III. or Prince Wilhelm IV of Orange and Nassau.

As of the 2000 census , Williamsburg County had 37,217 people in 13,714 households and 10,052 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 32.74 percent white, 66.26 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.48 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.73 percent of the population.

Of the 13,714 households, 34.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.3 percent were married couples living together, 22.4 percent were single mothers, 26.7 percent were non-families, 24.9 percent were single households, and 10.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.22 people.

28.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 9.0 percent between 18 and 24, 25.7 percent between 25 and 44, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 87.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 81.5 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 24,214 , and the median income for a family is $ 30,379. Males had a median income of $ 26,680 versus $ 18,202 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,794. 23.7 percent of families and 27.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
