Colleton County is a county in the US state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Walterboro .

geography

The county is located in southern South Carolina, borders with its southwestern tip on the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of ​​2935 square kilometers, of which 199 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Orangeburg County , Dorchester County , Charleston County , Beaufort County , Hampton County , Allendale County, and Bamberg County .

history

Colleton County was formed in 1682 and dissolved in 1769. In 1785 the county was re-created and converted into a judicial district on January 1, 1800. On April 16, 1868 it was again given the status of an independent county. It was named after John Colleton , a Lord Proprietor of the Carolina Province .

The Pon Pon Chapel is one of the county's ten entries in the NRHP.

Ten buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 27, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Colleton County had 38,264 people in 14,470 households and 10,490 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 55.52 percent white, 42.18 percent African American, 0.63 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.56 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.82 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.44 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 14,470 households, 33.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.1 percent were married couples living together, 16.8 percent were single mothers, 27.5 percent were non-families, 24.0 percent were single households and 10.1 percent were living with people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.11.

27.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.0 percent between 18 and 24, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44, 24.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 91.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 87.9 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,733 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,169. Males had a median income of $ 28,518 versus $ 19,228 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,831. 17.3 percent of families and 21.1 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
