Dorchester County is a county in the US state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is St. George .

The county is located in southeastern South Carolina, about 45 km from the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of ​​1,494 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Berkeley County , Charleston County , Colleton County , Bamberg County, and Orangeburg County .

history

Dorchester County was formed on February 25, 1897. It was named after the town of Dorchester , Massachusetts , from which the first settlers came in 1697.

According to the 2000 census , Dorchester County, South Carolina, had 96,413 people in 34,709 households and 26,309 families. The population density was 65 inhabitants per square kilometer.
