Hampton County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Hampton .

The county is located in southern South Carolina, borders Georgia to the southwest and has an area of ​​1,457 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Bamberg County , Colleton County , Beaufort County , Jasper County , Effingham County, Georgia, Screven County, Georgia, and Allendale Counties .

history

Hampton County was formed on February 18, 1878. It was named after Wade Hampton III , a Senator , Governor of South Carolina, and Confederate General .

The American Legion Hut is one of 14 entries for the county in the NRHP.

As of the 2000 census , Hampton County had 21,386 people in 7,444 households and 5,315 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 42.89 percent white, 55.67 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.62 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.43 percent were descended from two or more races.
