Saluda County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Saluda .
geography
The county is located in central northwest South Carolina and has an area of 1,196 square kilometers, of which 24 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Newberry County , Lexington County , Aiken County , Edgefield County, and Greenwood County .
history
Saluda County was formed in 1896. It was named after the Saluda River .
Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 29, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Saluda County had 19,181 people in 7,127 households and 5,295 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.80 percent white, 29.99 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.04 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.29 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.64 percent were descended from two or more races. 7.30 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,127 households, 31.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.2 percent were married couples living together, 14.5 percent were single mothers, 25.7 percent were non-families, 22.5 percent were single households, and 10.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.07.
24.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 9.2 percent between 18 and 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 95.3 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,774 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,603. Males had a median income of $ 29,221 versus $ 21,395 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,328. 12.0 percent of families and 15.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
