Edgefield County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Edgefield .

geography

The county is in western South Carolina and here on the Savannah River , which forms the border with Georgia . It has an area of ​​1312 square kilometers, of which 12 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Saluda County , Aiken County , Richmond County, Georgia, Columbia County (Georgia) , McCormick County, and Greenwood County . Just south across the state line is Augusta , Georgia's second largest city. The most important towns in the county are Jonston and Trenton next to Edgefield .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Augusta .

history

Edgefield County was formed on March 12, 1785 from parts of District 96 and converted into a judicial district on January 1, 1800. On April 16, 1868 it was again given the status of an independent county. It was named for its location in the western corner of the state, between the Savannah River and then unpopulated land.

According to the 2000 census , Edgefield County had 24,595 people in 8,270 households and 6,210 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 112.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 114.8 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,146 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,810. Males had a median income of $ 32,748 versus $ 23,331 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,415. 13.0 percent of families and 15.5 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
