Beaufort County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Beaufort .
geography
The county is located in southern South Carolina, borders the Atlantic Ocean in the southeast and has an area of 2390 square kilometers, of which 870 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Colleton County , Jasper County, and Hampton County .
history
Beaufort County was first formed as a judicial district in 1769. On April 18, 1868, it received the status of an independent county. The name goes back to Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort , who was Lord Proprietor in the Province of Carolina .
Five places in the county have National Historic Landmark status . 72 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 26, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Beaufort County had 120,937 people in 45,532 households and 33,056 families. The population density was 80 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 70.66 percent white, 23.98 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.79 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.84 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.41 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.79 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 45,532 households, 30.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.0 percent were single mothers, 27.4 percent were non-families, 21.5 percent were single households, and 8.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.90 people.
23.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 12.0 percent between 18 and 24, 27.2 percent between 25 and 44, 22.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 102.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 102 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 46,992 , and the median income for a family is $ 52,704. Males had a median income of $ 30,541 versus $ 25,284 for females. The per capita income was $ 25,377. 8.0 percent of families and 10.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.

Beaufort County has five parishes, including one city and four towns . For statistical purposes, the US Census Bureau maintains three census-designated places that are subordinate to the county and are not self-governing. Like the Unincorporated Communities, these are unincorporated areas.
