Yemassee is a town in the state of South Carolina in the United States of America and is located in Beaufort and Hampton Counties , not far from the borders of Colleton and Jasper Counties . The division into the county areas is done by the railway line that follows the county boundary. Yemassee had 807 residents in 2000, most of whom live in the Hampton County area, and is connected to the transportation network by Interstate 95 , US Route 21 and SC Route 68, and an Amtrak station.

History and economy

The name of the place is reminiscent of a Native American tribe , the Yamasee , who were one of the most important allies of the colony of South Carolina until the Yamasee War in 1715. The first attack of the war took place in Pocotaligo, now part of Yemassees.

William Gilmore Simms published a novel called The Yemassee: A Romance of Carolina in the 19th century, and the University of South Carolina at Columbia publishes a literary journal also named after the location.

The current location is surrounded by historic battlefields from both the American Revolutionary War and the Civil War . Remnants of the fortifications from the Civil War can be viewed along US Route 21 and 17a.

One of the few commercial breeding stations for non-human primates in the United States is located in Yemassee. In addition , the "Auld Brass Plantation House" built by Frank Lloyd Wright is located just outside of the local area.

According to the 2000 census, 807 people in 323 households and 208 families lived here. The population density is 69.4 inhabitants per km². The median income for a household in the city was $ 24,868 and the median income for a family was $ 31,429. Males had a median income of $ 31,944 versus $ 19,375 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,186. 22.9 percent of the population and 22.2 percent of families are below the poverty line. 24.7 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age, and 20.3 percent are 65 years of age or older.
