Hygromycin B is an antibiotic substance that is produced by bacteria of the species Streptomyces hygroscopicus . It is an aminoglycoside that is effective against bacteria, fungi and cells of higher eukaryotes . The effect is based on an inhibition of protein synthesis .

history

Hygromycin B was developed in the 1950s and has since been used as a feed additive in the breeding of pigs and chickens as an anti-worm agent. Hygromycin B is not approved as a feed additive in the EU . The hygromycin B producing bacterial species Streptomyces hygroscopicus was isolated from a soil sample in 1953. Resistance genes were discovered in the early 1980s.

Use in research

In everyday laboratory work, the antibiotic is used in the selection of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells with hygromycin resistance genes. The resistance is mediated by a kinase which inactivates hygromycin B through phosphorylation . Since the discovery of the hygromycin resistance gene, hygromycin B has been used as one of the standard antibiotics for selection.
