Berkeley County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Moncks Corner .

The county is located in southeastern South Carolina, about 25 km from the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 3,181 square kilometers, of which 338 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Georgetown County , Williamsburg County , Charleston County , Dorchester County , Orangeburg County, and Clarendon County .
history
Berkeley County was formed on January 31, 1882. It was named after one of the two brothers, John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton or William Berkeley , who were both Lord Proprietors in the province of Carolina .
Five places in the county have National Historic Landmark status . 25 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 26, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Berkeley Counties had 142,651 people in 49,922 households and 37,691 families. The population density was 50 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.00 percent white, 26.63 percent African American, 0.52 percent Native American, 1.87 percent Asian, 0.08 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.70 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.76 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 49,922 households, 39.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.7 percent were married couples living together, 14.2 percent were single mothers, 24.5 percent were non-families, 19.4 percent were single households and 5.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.15.
28.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 11.7 percent between 18 and 24, 31.2 percent between 25 and 44, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 7.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 103.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 102.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 39,908 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,242. Males had a median income of $ 31,583 versus $ 22,420 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,879. 9.7 percent of families and 11.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
