Dorchester County is a county in the US state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is St. George .

The county is located in southeastern South Carolina, about 45 km from the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 1,494 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Berkeley County , Charleston County , Colleton County , Bamberg County, and Orangeburg County .
history
Dorchester County was formed on February 25, 1897. It was named after the town of Dorchester , Massachusetts , from which the first settlers came in 1697.
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Middleton Place Plantation . Ten buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 27, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Dorchester County, South Carolina, had 96,413 people in 34,709 households and 26,309 families. The population density was 65 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.05 percent white, 25.08 percent African American, 0.73 percent Native American, 1.13 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.59 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.36 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.79 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 34,709 households, 40.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.2 percent were married couples living together, 14.6 percent were single mothers, 24.2 percent were non-families, 20.2 percent were single households and 6.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.13.
28.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 7.7 percent between 18 and 24, 31.6 percent between 25 and 44, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 9.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 91.7 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 43,316 , and the median income for a family is $ 50,177. Males had a median income of $ 35,423 versus $ 24,405 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,840. 7.1 percent of families and 9.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.

There are seven parishes in Dorchester County, including one city and six towns . For statistical purposes, the US Census Bureau maintains a census-designated places that are subordinate to the county and are not self-governing. Like the Unincorporated Communities, this is an unincorporated area.
