Union County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Union .

The county is located in northwest South Carolina, is about 25 miles north of North Carolina and has an area of ​​1,336 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Cherokee County , York County , Chester County , Fairfield County , Newberry County , Laurens County, and Spartanburg Counties .

history

Union County was formed on March 12, 1785, and became a judicial district on January 1, 1800. On April 16, 1868, it became a couny again. It was named after the union of two evangelical denominations (“Union Church”).

The Nathaniel Gist House is one of the county's 31 entries in the NRHP.

As of the 2000 census , Union County had 29,881 people in 12,087 households and 8,497 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 67.81 percent white, 31.05 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.61 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.67 percent of the population.

Of the 12,087 households, 29.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.8 percent were married couples living together, 16.8 percent were single mothers, 29.7 percent were not families, 26.8 percent were single households and 11.9 percent were living with people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.93.

23.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.2 percent between 18 and 24, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44, 24.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 89 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 85.3 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,441 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,661. Males had a median income of $ 29,371 versus $ 20,701 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,877. 11.1 percent of families and 14.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
