Bamberg County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Bamberg .

The county is located south of the geographic center of South Carolina, is about 25 miles from Georgia in the southwest , and has an area of ​​1024 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Orangeburg County , Dorchester County , Colleton County , Hampton County , Allendale County, and Barnwell Counties .

history

Bamberg County was formed on February 25, 1897. The name goes back to the Bamberg family, who operated a stagecoach station in the county, from which the city of the same name emerged.

Cemetery for the Confederate Fallen in Rivers Bridge State Park . This park is one of twelve entries for the county in the NRHP.

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Woodlands Plantation . Twelve structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 26, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Bamberg County had 16,658 people in 6,123 households and 4,255 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 36.47 percent white, 62.50 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.14 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.53 percent were descended from two or more races.
