The city lies at the beginning of the Charleston Peninsula headland between the Ashley River and the Cooper River . The Interstate 26 and Interstate 526 run through North Charleston. The city also includes the Charleston Air Force Base and Charleston Airport . In addition, Charleston Southern University is located in North Charleston.
