Eight teams from the current Bundesliga season took part in the tournament. The teams were divided into two groups of four teams each. Within each group, each team played each other once. The group winners and runners-up reached the semi-finals. The semi-final losers played for third place, the semi-final winners for the tournament victory. If it was a draw from the semi-finals after regular playing time, a nine-meter shootout followed.
The groups were called Champion's Group and Cupwinner's Group. However, clubs that were neither champions nor cup winners played in both groups.
