The 4th DFB indoor women's cup was held on February 1st and 2nd, 1997 . For the first time, the venue was Frankfurt am Main . The SG Praunheim defeated in the final the FSV Frankfurt with 4: 3 after penalty shootout. For Praunheim (today: 1. FFC Frankfurt) it was the first tournament victory.
Eight teams from the current Bundesliga season took part in the tournament. The teams were divided into two groups of four teams each. Within each group, each team played each other once. The group winners and runners-up reached the semi-finals. The semi-final losers played for third place, the semi-final winners for the tournament victory. If it was a draw from the semi-finals after regular playing time, a nine-meter shootout followed.
The preliminary round groups were called champions and cup winners groups. However, clubs that were neither champions nor cup winners played in both groups.
